Cannabidiol or CBD (a phytocannabinoid) is the second most prevalent ingredient found in cannabis (marijuana). It is derived directly from the hemp plant, a cousin of marijuana, or manufactured in a laboratory.
CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from the cannabis plant, then diluting it with a carrier oil like coconut or hemp seed oil.
It does not cause any high when you consume it. Actually, its THC (which stands for tetrahydrocannabinol) – the chemical that causes the “high” that goes along with marijuana consumption. THC if present will be in trace amounts in CBD products.
Is Cannabidiol Legal
Currently its legal in most US states. In India also you can use it. This is because even though The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 (NDPS Act) outlaws the recreational use of cannabis. The NDPS Act, however, does not apply to the leaves and seeds of cannabis plants. In case the CBD is extracted from the leaves of the cannabis, then technically it is not illegal. CBD oil manufactured under a license issued by the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 can be legally used.
That’s why you can see websites even in India offering Cannabidiol products like CBD seeds or oil.
Cannabidiol has effects on the brain, preventing the breakdown of a chemical that aggravates pain and affects mood, and mental function. It can reduce pain and anxiety. It also reduces psychotic symptoms associated with conditions such as schizophrenia as well as epilepsy.
A lot more research is needed in this. Hopefully, with Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) practitioners and academics publicly pushing for the legalization of medical cannabis, things will open more in the research side.
