Malankara dam is an earth cum masonry dam constructed across Thodupuzha river mainly for irrigation purposes.
It also has a small hydroelectric project – 10.5MW.
The artificial lake born from the dam covers an area of approximately 11 sq km.
Its located in Muttom, Thodupuzha Taluk, Idukki District, Kerala.
This dam is open for tourists all throughout the year.
There are two entrances for Malankara dam. One goes directly to Dam where fee is collected.
Other one leads you to a bridge where you can see the front side or the shutter side of the dam.
The view from each place is entirely different.
The scenic view around the Dam is mesmerizing.
When you pay fees and enter, there is a childrens park – where kids can spend time.
Malankara Dam – Photos
Its not a big dam, but its not crowded.
We went through this location as we were travelling from our home town Thrissur to Vagamon.
This is perfect for a small family getaway for a single day or an evening.
According to my personal opinion, this place is under utilized. It have so much scope for adventurous activities. It needs more attention from government.
